History • Founded in 1978 by Richard Rose in Toronto • produced 50 productions • 25 world premieres and 10 North American premieres. • the company is considered to be one of Canada's most important original creations. • The company’s plays have been nominated for and have won numerous awards. Such as: -Governor General’s Awards for Drama -Chalmers Awards for Outstanding New Play, -and Dora Mavor Moore Awards.

History • The company first came to fame with the environmental production Tamara in 1981 by John Krizanc • Throughout the late 1980s and early ‘90s, Necessary Angel produced important Canadian plays such as: -Coming Through Slaughter (1989) by Michael Ondaatje - Glenn (1992) by David Young -an adaptation of Timothy Findley’s Not Wanted on the Voyage (1993) • The company not only preformed Canadian theatre but also brought a variety of international theatre to Canada such as: - the work of Milan Kundera - British playwright Howard Barker.

History • They had many Governor-General Award-winners: -Three in the Head, Two in the Back (1993) by Jason Sherman -The Monument (1994) by Colleen Wagner. • In 1996 the company established a New Canadian Play Development Program, which created the preformance: -expressible Island (1997) by David Young, -Beating Heart Cadaver (1998) by Colleen Murphy, - It's All True (1999) by Jason Sherman • These were all nominated for the Governor-General's Awards for Drama as well as the Chalmers Award for Outstanding New Play.

  5. History • In 2003 Daniel Brooks, was appointed Artistic Director of the company. • Since he was appointed artistic director he has won four Dora Award-winning awards. - Bigger Than Jesus (2004) by Rick Miller • Half Life (2004) by John Mighton. • These outstanding shows still tour nationally.

  6. Mandate • Necessary Angel Theatre Company's mandate is to present plays that illuminate the beauty of passion, the significance of paradox and the complexity of the human experience, including the development of new Canadian plays, to the widest audience possible.

SeasonOfferings • Divisadero: A performance Michael Ondaatje and Daniel Brooks collaborate to adapt his novel Divisadero– It’s a passionate and violent story that goes through the themes of memory, identity, and love. It also goes through the intimate relationship between the speaker and listener. • Are you Okay This is directed by Peggy Baker, Daniel Brooks and Michael Healey - goes on the themes of physical mastery, physical innocence, the brutal humor of time, creation, destruction, re-creation and recreation.  • This is what happens next Directed by Daniel MacIvor and Daniel Brooks. This play goes on a journey deep into the heart of the Kingdom of Kevin with an astrologer, a lawyer, an absent father, the picture of our own Will and Me, which takes us through the dark forest of addiction, and divorce.

  8. Season Offerings • Tout commeelle Combines song and music with a poetic text to explore the difficult, and painful, separation of daughter and mother. This performance is a moving and bold piece of theatre about the inevitability of loss and the eternal nature of love. • Andromache Canadian poet Evie Christie collaborates with director Graham McLaren to put together this performance. The show is about the war that had just ended in a hail of brutal crimes against women and children. The new leader, Pyhrrus, has become love struck with a hostage, a recent widow Andromache and now faces a dilemma of life changing decisions.

  9. Size, Facilities, & Operating Budget • They attempt to make each performance different with the stages. • They have over 30 different stages and ways to put them in there theatre • They are located in various places, there stage is always being moved around. • Its located on 401 Richmond Street, Toronto, ON. • They had a 5 day work shop with Graham McLaren in July of 2010. • The operating budget was “disclosed” information.

  10. Interview with Matt White, Associate Producer • Job description: He associates with the main producer. He helps getting funds, and putting the shows out there. As well as giving input on the shows and ideas for what's going on, on the stage. • Job Challenges: His main challenge is getting the show out to the public, as well as keep everything organized for the producer. • Highlights of Job: The main highlight for his job is to be able to be apart of the making of shows, as well as seeing how the show progresses from the first day all the way to the opening. • What he wants in the next 5 years: Matt wishes to continue in being apart of the theatre company.. He wants to see them come out with more, and more shows, both Canadian based, as well as internationally based.
