  1. CRWRC Responds to Drought in the Sahel region of West Africa

  2. Across West Africa, crops have failed as a result of poor rains and insect infestations.

  3. Millions of lives are under threat.

  4. Rising food prices and the return • of 200,000 migrant workers due to civil wars in Libya and Ivory Coast have worsened the crisis.

  5. The country of Niger has been particularly hard hit having endured a devastating drought in 2005, in 2010, and again this year.

  6. CRWRC • is responding • through its local • Nigerien partners.

  7. Together, they are providing food assistance for six months for 4,062 families, approximately 28,434 people. This will give people time to harvest the 2012 crops.

  8. This aid includes Food for Work (FFW) projects where people receive food in exchange for work on projects that improve the community.

  9. Others will be able to purchase grain at subsidized prices.

  10. Those who can’t work or purchase subsidized grain will be given free rations

  11. This includes aid for those especially vulnerable including child-headed households, the elderly, and those with disabilities.

  12. CRWRC is also distributing a variety of improved seeds to increase crop diversity and introduce new crops that can better withstand drought.

  13. In addition to this response in Niger, CRWRC is also monitoring the drought situation in Mali and neighboring countries and willrespond accordingly.
