  2. What Is A Peer Mentor? • A mentor is an experienced person who provides information, advice, support, and encouragement to a less experienced person, often leading and guiding by example of his/her success in an area. • A peer is someone within the same age group

  3. How Can I Be A Good Peer Mentor? • listen • do not judge • know your way around the school • able to communicate in a positive way every day • models how to behave in the hallway

Peer Mentor Hallway Escort • Escort • Leaves each of their classes 5 minutes early • Has their pass on them at all times • Picks up their mentee in their class • Takes their mentee to his/her locker • Reminds their mentee of what they need for their next class • Sends the mentee inside their next class • Makes eye contact with the teacher or make a verbal statement letting someone know the mentee is in the room • Gets to their class ON TIME • Does not get suspended or in any trouble during the school year

Peer Mentor Connection • While walking with your mentee make conversation • Ask them how their day is • Ask them about their favorite class • Remind them to do well and make good choices • Tell them about things you like or different activities/sports you are a part of • Treat them with respect • Ask them about things they like

Peer Mentoring: What To Expect • Your mentee might not like having a mentor at first • Give it time • Usually they warm up if you treat them with respect • Communicate with the assistant principal, Peer Mentor co-leader (Ms. Waters), or the security officer (Mr. C) if there are any concerns or issues you notice

Peer Mentor Leadership • You were chosen because you are a leader in our school • Remember that you are in charge • Your mentee does not tell you what to do • Your mentee has to follow your directions • If your mentee wants to go to the bathroom after every class tell them that you two will pick 2-3 times they can go but not after every class • They can get a quick drink between classes • Remember that if you ever feel uncomfortable or your that your mentee is not showing you respect –walk away and get a staff member right away

  8. Peer Mentor-Homework Buddy • Peer mentors might be assigned to students who are not completed their homework or are struggling with being organized • You might be asked to come early or staff after school once a week to help your mentee

Peer Mentor-Social Session • Peer mentoring is about building a trusting relationship with your mentee • Someone they can vent to • Someone who treats them kindly no matter what • Someone who cares about their success • Someone who says hi when they see them before/after school or outside of school • Someone who wants to see their mentee do well

  10. Peer Mentoring Social Session • You will be excused from the last 10 minutes of your 6th hour class once a month • During this time you will meet with your mentee and just talk • You can talk about things you do to be involved in school • You can listen to your mentee talk about things • You will be informed when these sessions occur so that you can plan ahead

  11. Peer Mentoring 4 Lunch Events • An additional requirement of Peer Mentoring is attending 4 lunch events • They will be held during the mentee’s lunch period • You will miss a small part of your 4th hour • You will eat lunch with your mentee and other mentors/mentees • This lunch will be provided • You will talk and include your mentee in conversation and make them feel positive about the mentoring program • It will be your responsibility to make up any missing work during this lunch event

Peer Mentor Rewards • Leadership in the school • You become a role-model for all students here at Wilson Middle School not just your mentee • Invites to quarter reward events • You receive special invitations to school events • You receive Behavior Bucks more often • Job experience • Use Ms. Waters as a reference when you apply for your first job • You receive lunch rewards • A few times throughout the year you receive catering lunch events for you and the other peer mentors

  13. Thank You! • Some of you will start mentoring right away • Some of you might not be needed yet • Even if you are not mentoring someone you are still a peer mentor and leader • We are looking forward to seeing your leadership skills throughout the year • Remember to always make good choices because everyone is watching you and your leadership!
