  2. Outline • General • MSc EE Process • Rubrics • QnA

  3. Brief Background ~2011 the thesis process will be evaluated by Högskoleverket. VärdensBästa Magister Arbete (VBMA) project. (coodinated @ COM level) Aim; Generate HIGH quality thesis works.  Students get good work experience, and can start working directly in industry.  We get publications, that increases our rating.

  4. MSc Thesis Project • Work in pair of students • Academic supervisor, faculty reviewer and examiner • 30 ECTS points • 20 weeks of FULL TIME WORK • 1600 hours of work, ~1 full year of work! • Scientific work!

  5. MSc Thesis Project • Independence! • You need to show that you can identify problems and solve them, without external aid. • Time planning! • You must plan your time, in accordance with your supervisors availability! • You are responsible to handle your thesis project!

  6. Thesis - Project - Research Project Project Thesis Thesis R R Project Thesis Thesis Project R R

  7. Research • Add to the current human knowledge (CHK) • i.e. your own knowledge growth is not enough • Identify a “gap” in CHK, fill it. • Do some thing new and/or differently! • Show that it is NEW and/or DIFFERENT

  8. What is good research? • Open minded • Critical • General • Considering alternatives • Motivates choices • Usable – Some one takes interest

  9. Why do we use templates? • Structure information • Similar structure across many documents • Simplifies reading and re-reading of a document • Unified look on documents! • You find the templates that YOU are to use at : www.bth.se/com/mscee material

  10. Documents/Files • When exchanging documents, use PDF (there are no options!) • NAME your documents like: <ThesisNumber>_title_<subject> You can see your thesis number on; www.bth.se/com/mscee/ status – writing/working • Chose subject suitable, if its needed.

  11. Readable English • Your English must be GOOD • Or you fail and/or get a very low grade! • Study the “Lecture on writing English” on the course page. • Take the “Academic English Writing” course

  12. Know your limitations! • Select an topic/area that you have good knowledge in! • Choose method(s) that you can handle! • Don’t doo too much! • Less is More! • The number of pages is usually inverse-proportional to contribution/grade.

  13. Course Aims • have deepened knowledge within the field of electrical engineering • be able to carry out independent work which comprises a deepened knowledge in relation to earlier studies within the subject. The student’s own ideas and analytical and critical thinking should, in particular, be encouraged. • through planning, implementation, and reporting get experience of scientific work within electrical engineering • be prepared for research studies • have obtained deepened knowledge based on experience in electrical engineering as a preparation for tasks in a working life.

  14. Communication • E-mail • Subject; [MscEE;Thesis Nr]: ----- • Email from same email as registered in thesis system, and state the you full name (as registered in thesis system) in the body of the message. • Response time 3~4 days.
