Time Concepts • To indicate tense (past, present, future) in ASL, use a time sign at the beginning of the sentence. • LAST-WEEK CHICKEN I EAT • PAST MONTH NEW CAR I BUY • Once a tense has been established, everything that follows is understood to be in that time frame until a new time is specified. • LAST WEEK CHICKEN I ATE. • BASKETBALL I PLAYED. • BOYFRIEND I MET.

  3. Time Concepts Continued • To refer to specific times, the general time sign for past, present, and future are combined with the signs for days, weeks, and months. • Last month: PAST + MONTH • This month: THIS + MONTH • In two weeks: 2-WEEK+FUTURE

Bell Work: Contrastive Structure • Referents: people, places, or things that are not in the immediate environment • Establish referents in a specific location in the signing space in front of you • Establish the referent by naming what you are referring to and then pointing to a location • To refer to the noun again, point to the same location

  5. Continued… • As you compare two nouns, shift your head and body slightly in agreement with the space you established for each referent

  8. Contrastive Structure Activity • Write down 3 facts about two different partners • Practice using contrastive structure to sign the information • Be prepared to sign in front of the class!

  9. Bell Work: Negative Statements • To form a negative statement, sign NOT and shake your head throughout the statement • To answer no to a yes/no question, sign no followed by a negative statement or a statement that gives the correct information. • Example: Are you married? • No, I’m not married. • No, I’m divorced • If you don’t have something, or there is none, or something doesn’t exist, use the sign NONE to form the negative statement
