  1. What’s all this about a reading culture?… and how can we get one? By Sandra Land CAE UKZN

A society has a reading culture when people in it: • read newspapers • read magazines • read books • take books out of libraries (and take them back) • use the internet • communicate in writing, by email or letters • read a range of material for information • read to children • think that reading is a pleasure

  3. This implies that people who are part of a reading culture: • can read • know what they can get out of reading • can afford books and papers • choose to read

  4. How many of us can read? 17.9% of South African adults have no education A further 16% have less than complete primary education, or its equivalent. Only about 66% of us can read well. Census 2001

  5. Accessibility of print materials is governed by attitudes … of governments … of education planners and educators … of authors and publishers … of ordinary people

What attitudes? • Government’s attitude to taxes and how to spend tax money • Government’s attitude to investing in the lives of ordinary people • Educators’ attitudes to text books and fiction • Everybody’s attitude to languages • Writers and publishers attitude to earning a living by writing • Everybody’s attitude to literacy itself, and what to do with it

  7. If we want a reading culture, we should • Promote SA writing in all its languages • Make reading material available to everyone, and make it worth their while to read it • Use more books in schools • Use more books in adult learning centres • Teach teachers how to teach people to read well • Fund libraries better • Find ways of allowing writers and publishers to make a living, yet make reading material affordable to all
