  5. Influence • During the 18th -19th centuries / less appreciated • But in the late 19th - early 20th centuries/ T.S. Eliot/praised and imitated / modern poetic practice/ an acknowledged master.

  6. Metaphysical Poetry • the poetry of John Donne and other 17th poets who wrote in a similar style. It is characterized by verbal wit and excess, ingenious structure, irregular meter, colloquial language, elaborate imagery, and a drawing together of dissimilar ideas. • the metaphysical conceit(奇喻)
