Introductions • Revision of the 1994 National Voluntary Arts Standards • 2005 Dance Education Standards – National Dance Education Organization • Led by NCCAS – National Coalition for Core Arts Standards • 9 Leadership organizations: Americans for the Arts, AATE, The College Board, EdTA, NAEA, NAfME, NDEO, SEADAE, Young Audiences • National Media Arts Education Representatives

Why revise now? • Revision of other content standards • Additional research in arts education • Technology – in the arts and in instruction • Capture best practice from state revisions in last 2 decades • Meet challenges for today’s arts educators • Measurement of student learning in the arts • Robust curricular design + flexibility • Building a web-based set of standards

Content areas • Writing standards in 5 discipline areas: • Dance • Media Arts • Includes forms of moving images and digital graphics as well as virtual, interactive/computational artmaking and game design • Included here is a Media Arts FAQ and a Media Arts position paper created by NCCAS in support of writing media arts standards. • Music • Theatre • Visual Arts

  6. WHAT WE LEARNED in 2013

Update: by the numbers… • More than 250,000 certified dance, music, theatre and visual arts teachers work in our nation’s K-12 schools • 47,000 visits by arts educators, arts advocates, teaching artists and others reviewed the draft revisions to the nation’s voluntary arts standards in July, September and October • More than 4,800 of those interested in standards revision provided feedback on the standards via on-line surveys in July and October, representing all 50 states and 3 nations • 61 selected writing team members combed through 1,056,000 responses and comments from the field on PreK-8 draft standards in early August following the first review…

  8. Update: Changes we have made • Separated standards from instructional resources and supports • Created a unified set of Anchor Standards shared by ALL arts disciplines  • Worked to make the standards fewer, clearer and more rigorous

Update: Changes we continue to work on • Creating glossaries for the discipline standards • Developing and beta-testing a website where you can select the way you organize, view and print the standards • Professional development opportunities – in person, in print and virtually – in support of the standards • Continuing to develop our Model Cornerstone Assessments – at least one of which is available for each discipline this review cycle
