  2. Before the Garden • Passover meal (Matthew 26:20-25) • Lord’s Supper instituted (Matthew 26:26-29) • Apostles argue over who was the greatest (Luke 22:24) • The 12 apostles tell Jesus they are willing to die with Him (Matthew 26:35) • Jesus gives instruction and encouragement (John 13-17)

  3. Prayer in the Garden Matthew 26:36-46 • Jesus was very distressed, and brought along three of His apostles. • The physical side of Jesus was dreading this, but His spiritual side was ready to submit to God’s will. • Luke 22:44 – “…and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.” • While Jesus is going through this extreme concentration and distress, where are Peter, James and John? Asleep (vv. 40, 43, 45).

  4. Betrayal and Arrest Matthew 26:47-56 John 18:4-11 • Imagine the shock of the disciples – and the disappointment of Jesus – to see Judas leading the crowd into the garden. • John 18:10 – this scene was filled with a lot of emotion and drama, which couldn’t have helped Jesus any. • Matthew 26:56 – these are the same men who had told Jesus they would die with Him just hours ago (v. 35)

  5. Before the Sanhedrin Mark 14:53-65 • Peter, a man of great faith, follows at a distance and sits with the men wanting to kill Jesus (v. 54). • The contradicting false witnesses were actually proving Jesus’ innocence. • This “trial” violated Jewish law in many ways.

  6. Peter’s Denials Luke 22:55-62 • Peter – the apostle who had shown his great faith many times – denies ever knowing Jesus because he is afraid. • Jesus knew what Peter had done (v. 61). • This moment probably hurt Jesus more than any of the slaps, punches, and insults. He was now alone.
