  1. Circulatory System

  2. Cardiovascular/Circulatory System • At this station you will: • Learn the 3 main functions of the cardiovascular system. • Learn the main parts of the cardiovascular system. • Determine how much blood is in a human body.

  3. Get Thinking!! • How many liters of blood are there in the human body? • Talk to your group about your first estimate. • Write you first estimate on your task sheet.

  4. Make an educated hypothesis. • Now find a liter container at your station. • Fill this liter container with liquid. • Humm? Would you like to change your estimate? • If so, talk to your group and make a second estimate.

  5. Keep Thinking • Now fill a container with two liters of liquid. • Do you think that is how much blood is in the human body? • Talk to your group • Now fill a container with four liters of liquid. • Do you think that is how much blood is in the human body? • Talk to your group

  6. What is our answer? • Now fill a container with five liters of liquid. • Do you think that is how much blood is in the human body? • Talk to your group • Could this be the answer?

  7. YES!! • The human body contains an estimated 5 liters of blood.

  8. Keep thinking!! How long does it take for all this blood to circulate through the body?

  9. Let’s estimate • Talk to your group. • What is your first prediction? • Write it on your task sheet.

  10. What is your final estimate? • How much time does it take for the 5 liters of our blood to circulate through the body? • 20 seconds

  11. Get the Facts • Use your textbook (Chapter 3, pgs. 78-89) or the websites below to learn about the Cardiovascular System. Record the answers to the following questions on your data sheet: • What is the function of the Cardiovascular System? (pgs. 78-79) • What are the main parts or organs of the Cardiovascular System? • Why is the Cardiovascular System also referred to as the Circulatory System? • http://kidshealth.org/kid/htbw/heart.html • http://www.kidport.com/RefLib/Science/HumanBody/Heart.htm • http://yucky.discovery.com/noflash/body/pg000131.html

  12. Videos • Watch the videos: (1) Blood Flow in the Heart and (2) Circulation • http://www.kidport.com/RefLib/Science/HumanBody/Cardiovascular/Video/HeartBloodFlowVideo.htm • Watch the videos from the textbook (chapter 3): (1) The Heart, (2) Two Loops, and (3) Blood

  13. Clean Up the Station • Reset the station’s supplies. • Go back to the first slide so the next group can begin.

  14. Circulatory System

  15. Teacher Slide • Title: Circulatory Exploration • Objective: To have students come to a better understanding of different facts about the circulatory system and to take away a physical sense of what the system does. • MO GLE: • Math: MA. ME. 1. • Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, system process of measurement. • Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurement. • Science: SC. 3. 2. C. 8. F. • Explain the interactions between the circulatory and respiratory systems in exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide between cells and the atmosphere (when oxygen enters the body, passes into the blood stream, and is transported into the cell; carbon dioxide is transported out of the cell, passes into the blood stream, and exits the body) • Depth of Knowledge • Level 2: Estimate, Infer, Organize, Represent and interpret data

  16. Stretch your brain. • Why is it important for you to have a healthy heart? • Write a few ideas on your task sheet. • Discuss with your group.

  17. Stretch your brain. • What happens when you get a cut and start bleeding? • Write a few ideas on your task sheet. • Discuss with your group

  18. Stretch your brain. • Why does the blood turn red when it gets outside the body? • Write a few ideas on your task sheet. • Discuss with your group
