  2. Heavy Artillery • The most popular weapon of the generals • Enormous power and fired large shells. • These shells churned the land in France into a sea of mud.

  3. Shell size

  4. Machine Gun • The “Vickers” machine gun could fire 600 bullets per minute. • Germans could mow down the enemy.

  5. The Tank • Armor-plated tractor (British), 6km per hour. • Armed with both Cannons and machine guns.

  6. Close Range weapons • Bayonettes – long knives fixed to the end of rifles. • Grenades – the British used the pineapple shaped Mills Bomb, while the Germans used a stick-shaped grenade know as “potato-mashers”.

  8. Gas Weapons • Gas weapons were effective at first, but gas mask soon made the gas ineffective.
