  4. facts • Fact: Forty states150, comprising the majority of the American population, are "right-to-carry" • states. Statistics show that in these states the crime rate fell (or did not rise) after the right-tocarry • law became active (as of July, 2006). Nine states deny or restrict the right to carry. • Fact: Crime rates involving gun owners with carry permits have consistently been about 0.02% • of all carry permit holders since Florida’s right-to-carry law started in 1988.151 • Fact: After passing their concealed carry law, Florida's homicide rate fell from 36% above the • national average to 4% below, and remains below the national average (as of the last reporting • period, 2005).152 • Fact: In Texas, murder rates fell 50% faster than the national average in the year after their • concealed carry law passed. Rape rates fell 93% faster in the first year after enactment, and

  5. more facts • CCW permit holders murdered at least 286 private citizens. • 25 murder-suicides were committed by CCW permit holders. • 18 mass shootings were committed by CCW permit holders. • 11 law enforcement officers killed by CCW permit holders.

  6. Even more facts • 70 to 80 million Americans own guns. • 40-45% of households in the U.S. contain a gun. This translates into a loaded gun in one in every ten households with children, and a gun that’s left unlocked and just “hidden away” in one in every eight family homes. • The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." • As of January, 2011, 39 states have laws permitting individuals with gun licenses to carry concealed guns in the streets. • The Federal Gun Free School Zone Act of 1995 states that people with guns cannot walk within 1,000 feet of any school (kindergarten to 12th grade). • There are no federal laws that prevent minor access to guns. • In 2010, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence graded Obama an "F" on gun control, citing "extraordinary silence and passivity." • In 2009, the federal government performed 14 million background checks on gun purchases. • Only nine states have trigger-lock laws, where gun sellers are required to sell integrated or internal trigger locks with handguns. • Most guns used in crimes are stolen, either from homes or gun dealers. • Federal law requires federally licensed dealers to report guns that they know have been lost or stolen to law enforcement.
