Recap of chap 31: • Huck decides “forever betwixt two things” and decides to “steal Jim out of slavery,” even if it means “going to hell” • He makes his own decision here about what to do despite society’s ideals. Huck decides he is tired of trying to do the “right” thing and will go “whole hog” on the “bad” action of freeing Jim.

Explain using at least one quote. • 2. In what ways is Jim admirable, particularly in this last episode? Discuss how Twain adds layers of meaning/depth to his character. • 3. So does Huck pass the Hero’s journey according to Campbell? Be sure to articulate what Huck needed to do to pass and why he did/didn’t. Use at least one quote. • 4. The novel ends with Huck feeling unsure about what his future holds. Where is Huck going and why? What do you predict will happen to Huck? What sort of life do you think he will have? Why? • 5. Were you disappointed at the end of Huck Finn? Explore the reasons why Twain ends the book the way he does. • 6. Honors Only. Imagine you are responding to a hypothetical essay prompt that asks you to “reveal a piece of insight about humanity (message) that Twain delivers through his various characters.” Your task here is to create a single TOPIC SENTENCE (nice, juicy, complex, thoughtful ones) for ALL of the following characters in response to the prompt: Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, Miss Watson or Widow Douglass, Jim, Pap, Sherburn, Duke and/or the King, and one other character of your choosing.
