Scientific Variables & Hypothesis

A hypothesis is an assumption or estimated guess about expected outcomes in experiments. For fair testing, we manipulate at least one variable while keeping other conditions constant. A controlled variable is what we measure, the independent variable is changed deliberately, and the dependent variable is kept unchanged. For example, when throwing rubbish into a bin, we wonder if being observed affects our aim. This guide outlines how to conduct a fair experiment, emphasizing the importance of honest effort and behavior during the process.

  1. Scientific Variables & Hypothesis

  2. What is a Hypothesis? • A hypothesis is an assumption or estimated guess on what you expect to happen.

  3. Fair Testing & Variables • Fair Testing: In a fair test, we try and change at least one variable but keep as many testing conditions the same as possible • Controlled Variable: The one we measure • Independent Variable: The one we change independently • Dependant Variable: The one we keep constant (the same)

  4. My First Hypothesis • When you throw a piece of rubbish into the bin, are you more likely to miss or score if people are staring at you? • How can we make this experiment fair?

  5. Our First Real Experiment • I (Mr Fedley) will be collecting the worksheets for this experiment. It’s important that you try your best so that I know what work you can do!! • It’s also important to, ohhh – behave!!
