  1. VARIABLES

  2. Warm-up • Choose a topic below and write a testable question and hypothesis regarding the topic. • Mobile phones • Exercise • Learning • Dog behavior • Be sure your questions follow the PLUS format • Be sure your hypothesis has a “because”

  3. Warm-up • Silently read the article and take notes regarding the three types of variables. As you read, note information about each of the variables in a table as shown below.

  4. Quick Review • What two steps of the scientific method are missing from the list below? • Question • Research • Test • Communicate • Write a scientific question using the topic of TCAP scores. • Write a hypothesis for the question below. • What is the relationship between education level and salary?

  5. CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT Independent variable Dependent variable Variable that is observed effect output Then… manipulated • Variable that is changed • cause • input • If… • responding

  6. Controls • Kept the same throughout experiment • Help keep experiment consistent • Ensure results are valid

  7. EXAMPLESIndependent variableDependent variable • If you exercise regularly and eat healthy, then you will lose weight. • If you do not try, then you will fail.

  8. More examples • If living cells are exposed to concentrated saltwater, then they will dehydrate through the process of osmosis. • If an object is in a state of free fall, then it will accelerate at 9.8 m/s^2 until reaching terminal velocity. • If a well-designed airfoil is placed on the rear of a car, then the vehicle will achieve higher cornering speeds.

  9. Guided practice Underline IV, circle DV, list C • How does the angle of a ramp, effect the speed of a ball rolling down the ramp? • How does the temperature of water, effect how rapidly a goldfish breathes? • How does average household income relate to percentage of households with internet access? • How does the amount of math class time a student has, effect his/her CSAP scores?

  10. Individual practiceUnderline IV, circle DV, list controls 5. How does the amount of air pressure in a basketball, effect how high the ball bounces? 6. How is the height of a person related to arm span? 7. How does the economy relate to the unemployment rate? 8. How does the unemployment rate relate to the crime rate? 9. What is the effect of caffeine on the resting heart rate of mice?

  11. Assignment – read through article again and complete table below

  12. DOLIdentify the IV and DVWrite a hypothesis for 2 of the questions. 10. Does taking extra Vitamin C reduce how often that a person gets sick? 11. Does weight training increase how high a basketball player can jump? 12. Does the amount of sunlight effect how tall tomato plants will grow?

  13. DOLIdentify the IV, DV, and possible Controls Adrian is conducting some testing on a pendulum. He wants to determine how length, mass, and angle effect the period of the pendulum. (Warning!!! There are multiple independent variables.)

  14. DOL • Copy the two questions below. • For each question: • Write a hypothesis • Write a procedure for testing the hypothesis • Identify the IV, DV, and CV • Which type of phone (Android, iPhone, or Blackberry) has the longest battery life? • Which type of vehicle GPS system (Garmin, TomTom, or Magellan) provides the most accurate directions?

  15. Testable questions • 6th grade • How does the length, mass, and angle effect the period of pendulum? • 7th grade • Which type of tape (duct, scotch, painter, packing) has the greatest adhesiveness? • 8th grade • What type of model boat design is capable of holding the most weight?

  16. 8th grade • What type of model boat design is capable of holding the most weight? • Materials • 60 cm X 30 cm piece of aluminum foil • 10 wooden sticks • Sand • Beaker • Measurements • Mass of the boat • Volume of the boat (using beans) • Mass of maximum cargo
