(Christology) The Study of Christ
Christianity is Christ • The Christian faith is centered upon the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. • Our faith could not continue to exist and thrive were it not for the fact that we serve a living Savior. • Therefore, there are facts that we must understand and believe in order to become committed Christians.
1. The pre-existence of Christ • Jesus enjoyed eternal existence as the second member of the holy trinity even before his incarnation as a man. John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word , and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. John 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from God and was returning to God.
2. The Deity of Christ • Our Lord Jesus shares the same attributes of deity as the other two members of the Godhead, including: • Omnipresence - Matthew 18:20 For where two or three come together in my name, there I am with them. • Omniscience - John 2:24-25 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in man. • Omnipotence - Col 1:16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.
3. The humanity of Christ • The bible declares the deity of Christ as well as his full humanity. Our Savior is fully God and fully man. • The pre-existent Son became a man through a miraculous birth. Galatians 4:4 But when the time has fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive the full rights of sons. • The bible portrays a very human Christ who was hungry, tired and all the experiences of a man. Hebrews 2:18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
4. The work of Christ • The Lord Jesus Christ is intimately involved in all phases of both the creation and salvation of mankind and the material universe. • Prophet - Master spokesman for the heavenly Father - John 3:34 For the one whom God has sent speak the words of God. • Priest - Hebrews 7:24-25 But because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. • King - Revelation 19:16 On his robe and on his thigh he has his name written: King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
4. The work of Christ (cont) • Messiah – the anointed one - Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. • Savior – Christ died for us to save us from the penalty, power and presence of sin 1 John 4:14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Matthew 1:21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.
4. The work of Christ (cont) • Redeemer – closely aligned with the notion of savior, Jesus took our sins from us to redeem or purchase us from the bondage of : • The curse of the law - Galatians 5:13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather serve one another in love. • Satan - Hebrews 2:14-15 ……by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death, i.e., the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. • A sinful lifestyle - 1 Peter 1:18 …. You were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers.
4. The work of Christ (cont) • Lord – the bible makes it abundantly clear that our risen Savior is Lord of heaven and earth. Acts 2:36 Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucifies, both Lord and Christ.
Summary The bible present a portrait of Jesus Christ which gives us an insight into the wonder of His personality. • He is eternally one with the Father and the Holy Spirit in the Godhead. • He assumed human nature some 2,000 years ago. • Born of a virgin • Lived a sinless life • Disclosed the mind of God in his teaching and preaching • Demonstrated the compassion and power of God in His healing and delivering works • Died upon the cross as an atonement for our sins • He was raised from the dead and today sits at the right hand of majesty on high • From whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
