  1. Setting the Tone:Journal Writing In five to seven sentences, tell the purpose of a card catalog and Reader’s Guide and why you would use either source.

  2. Purpose • What are you learning? • How to read a dictionary and a thesaurus. • Why are you learning this? • To locate a rich source of information.

  3. Grammar: Verbs - tells what the subject is doing Linking Verb: "links" the subject to what is said about the subject. • Mary is a teacher. (mary = teacher) • The sky became dark. (the sky > dark) Action Verb: describes an action. • hit, explode, fight, run, go • A transitive verb takes a direct object (tells who/what): • EX: Somebody killed the President. • We are watching TV. • An intransitive verb does not have a direct object: • EX: He died. • John goes to school. regular verbs: base, past tense, past participle look, looked, looked work, worked, worked irregular verbs: base, past tense, past participle buy, bought, bought cut, cut, cut do, did, done What is the verb in each sentence? 1. Wednesday may be cloudy. 2. The spacecraft remains idle on the launch pad. 3. Jane became a medical technician. 4. The birds sound happy in the rain. 5. Will you be late tomorrow? 6. Despite the delay, Max stayed calm and quiet. 7. You will be much safer if you wear your seat belt. 8. The wind certainly sounds fierce.

  4. Crafting the Lesson(Me) Dictionary: a reference book that lists words in alphabetical order. It includes definitions, spellings, parts of speech, pronunciations, usage, and word origins. Certain dictionaries contain synonyms and antonyms. Thesaurus: reference book that contains synonyms for entry words. The entry words are listed in alphabetical order. In addition to synonyms, some thesauruses contain parts of speech, definitions, antonyms, and example sentences.

  5. Crafting the Lesson(We) • What part of speech is mussel? • What is the definition of mustache? • What is the origin of mustard? • How many meanings does must have? • What is the word entry between mustache and mustard?

  6. Crafting the Lesson(We) Use the thesaurus to find synonyms and antonyms for the word “must.” What part of speech are the synonyms and antonyms?

Composing Meaning(Two) With a partner, find the answer to the questions • Dictionary • Find the guide words for the word “prime”. • Part of speech for the word “roof”. • How many syllables for the word “binary”? • How many meanings does the word “stay” have? • Thesaurus • Find synonyms for the underlined word in the sentence • Shiny stars dotted the night sky. • The champion basketball team has good players. • For the word “sad”, find the following: • part of speech • Phrase • Synonym (1) • Related words (1) • Antonym (1)

Composing Meaning (You) Use 1072 dictionary reference source to answer the following questions. • What are the guide words? • What is the part of speech for the 1st "ride?" • Where is the word origin for "riding?" • What are three synonyms for the word "ridicule?" • How many meanings does the word "riddance" have? • How many syllables are in "ridgeline?" • Find another word for "riddance." • Find a word that means the opposite of "ride." • Which words have more than one meaning? • What is the definition of "riddle" used as a verb?

  9. Reflection • What can you find in a dictionary? • How is the information in a dictionary similar to the information found in a thesaurus? • How is the information in a dictionary different from the information found in a thesaurus?
