  2. Being influenced by good designers is a great way to get ideas... There are certain designers you need to know about for the exam…

  3. Designers you need to know about... • Harry Beck (hit the deck coz a train went whooshing by) • Redesigned the London Under ground map in 1930s • The lines are all straight! Why? • The stations are pretty much equally spaced apart! Why? • Lines and stations are in certain colours! Why?

  4. What are the advantages of Harry Beck’s style of map?

  5. Designers you need to know about... Alberto Alessi (doesn’t like things messy!) – Wanted to produce stylish, fun, creative designs that could be mass produced (1970s)... Although he didn’t design any of products himself!!!...

  6. Designers you need to know about... Alberto Alessi – Alessi employed designers and architects to come up with fun and creative designs... A well known example is Philippe Starck’s lemon squeezer Phillip Stark (squeezes his lemons in the park)

  7. Designers you need to know about... • Margaret Calvert and Jock Kinneir (driving in their Vauxhall Cavalier) • - Designed new road signs needed when motorways first opened in Britain. • They created a ‘rounded’ font! Why? • They developed a colour scheme! Why? • Other countries copied! Why?

  8. Designers you need to know about... Robert Sabuda (created books that really woo ya!) – Well know for creating pop up books. Developed a style of paper engineering.

  9. Designers can help create a brand... • Wally Olins (designs brands for the Brits and the foreigns) • world leading brand consultant • he worked with BT and P&O to help develop their brands...
