  2. Purpose • To assist state public health agencies to investigate and address their increasing, stagnant or high infant mortality (IM) rates.

  3. Partners • AMCHP • CDC • March of Dimes • Universities • States

  4. Process • Support: AMCHP awarded CDC funds in summer 2004 & fall 2005 • Participating states: Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana, Missouri & North Carolina • Selection criteria: research/data capacity, leadership, unique factors

Products • Sept 2004 Objectives: • Establish common purpose & direction • Share natl & state IM trends & preliminary analyses • Suggest hypotheses to explain recent trends & potential methods to investigate them • Develop action plans to explore IM in each participating state • July 2005 Objectives: • Review team progress w/action plans & analyses • Help teams exploring their IM strategies • Review toolkit content

Progress • Nov 2005 Survey: 89% percent of responding team members felt their efforts had medium to high impact on state strategy to reduce IM. • Successes: state IM taskforce; new MCH epidemiology staff; input to governor’s IM reduction plan; data analysis & collection; provider training; fp waiver expansion; new & strengthened partnerships. • Challenges: money, time, staff; data limitations, analytic capacity; disparities; professional recognition of infant health as lifespan issue.

  8. Prospects • September 2006:Disseminate preliminary report on SIM activities, state efforts,new resources & recommendations. • December 2006: Convene final meeting of state teams to share findings, address challenges, review research & prevention plan proposals. • September 2007: Disseminate toolkit and final lessons learned report via peer-reviewed pubs, conferences, etc. • Ongoing: pending partner involvement and funding.
