  3. Categories • Mobility and Physical Impairments • Spinal Cord Disability • Head Injuries/Brain Disability • Vision • Hearing • Cognitive or Learning Disabilities • Psychological Disorders • Invisible Disabilities

  4. Mobility and physical impairments • Can include • Upper limbs • Lower limbs • Born with • Acquired age problem • Effect of a disease • *People who have a broken bone also fall into this category.

  5. Spinal Cord Disability • Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) can lead to lifelong disability • Mostly occurs during severe accidents • Can be a birth defect • Can result in total or partial loss in use of limbs

  6. Head injuries/Brain Disability • Disability in brain occurs due to brain injury • Range: mild, moderate, severe • Two types – Acquired and Traumatic • Acquired-result of birth defect • Traumatic- result from an accident

  7. Vision • Hundreds of thousands of people suffer from various sight impairments • Examples • Blindness, ocular trauma, scratched cornea, diabetes related eye conditions, dry eyes etc.

  8. Hearing • Includes people who are completely or partially deaf • Deafness can occur from birth or onset later in life

  9. Cognitive/Learning Disabilities Psychological Disorders • Dyslexia • Speech disorders • ADD • ADHD • Mood disorders • Personality disorders • Schizophrenia

  10. Invisible Disabilities • Not immediately seen by others • Usually surrounded by a medical condition • Examples: fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy, lupus

Things to think about………… • 10% of the world’s total population (650 million people) live with a disability • Disabled persons are more likely to be victims of violence • 5% of children ages 5-17 have disabilities • 10% of people ages 18-64 have disabilities • 38% of adults ages 65 + have disabilities • More females are affected by disabilities than males (.7% higher) • 16.1 million people with limited cognitive function or have a mental or emotional illness that interferes with daily activities

Of individuals ages 15 and older….. • 1.8 million cannot see printed words • 3.3 million use a wheelchair • 11 million need assistance with daily activities • 1 million cannot hear everyday conversations • 2.5 million have difficulty having their own speech understood by others • **28% of disabled individuals have less than a high school education. • **13% of disabled individuals have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
