  3. The Russian Revolution • In the 1800’s, while the rest of the world was living it up with the Industrial Revolution, Russia was still living like it was the middle ages… What do you think will happen?

  4. The Russian Revolution • Serfdom - A member of the lowest feudal class, attached to the land owned by a lord and required to perform labor in return for certain legal or customary rights. • An agricultural laborer under various similar systems, especially in 18th- and 19th-century Russia and eastern Europe. • A person in bondage or servitude.

  5. The Russian Revolution • Many serfs began to revolt because many European countries had done away with this practice • 1861, Serfdom is abolished by Alexander ll. Alexander stated, “It is better to abolish serfdom from above than to wait until the serfs begin to free themselves from below.”

  6. The Russian Revolution • In 1894, Nicholas II became the czar of the Russian Empire • Nicholas continued the oppressive treatment of the Russian people

  7. The Russian Revolution • 1905, hundreds of striking workers were fed up and marched to the czar’s palace to voice their displeasure.

  8. The Russian Revolution • He ordered his soldiers to shoot into the crowd, killing 100s of striking workers…yeah that was it! • This event becomes known as “Bloody Sunday.”

  9. After “Bloody Sunday,” Nicholas agreed to share some of his leadership roles with the Duma. Duma- a national assembly that limited the powers of the czar The Russian Revolution

  10. The Russian Revolution • The Revolutionary feelings continued, until on March 15, 1917 Nicholas the II was forced to step down as czar • 16 months later, Nicholas and his entire family are all killed

  11. The Russian Revolution • One party that had gained strength during the revolution was the Bolsheviks • The Bolsheviks were protected by the Red Army, while those that opposed them were the White Army • They were led by a man named Vladimir Lenin

  12. The Russian Revolution • Lenin believed in the ideals introduced by the German philosopher Karl Marx known as socialism.

  13. The Russian Revolution • November 1917, the Bolsheviks overthrow the Duma and Lenin is chosen to lead Russia • Lenin removes Russia from WWI and civil wars are fought throughout the country

  14. The Russian Revolution Lenin does three things: • Moves the capital to the its old location, Moscow • Institutes communism • Re-names the nation, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic, or USSR/ Soviet Union

  15. The Russian Revolution • Lenin becomes ill and passes away in 1924 • A new Soviet Leader takes power in 1928, Josef Stalin • Born JosifVissarionovichDzhugashvili, but thankfully changed his name to Josef Stalin, which means “man of steel.”

  16. The Russian Revolution • If you thought Lenin was bad, Stalin was worse • Stalin was extremely oppressive to the Soviet people. He arrested people for speaking freely, imprisoned people without reason, and killed factory managers that didn’t meet quotas.

  17. Stalin had over 15 million people arrested and sent to concentration camps in Siberia Stalin viewed religious leaders, teachers, Ukrainians, and those that disagreed with his Communist rule as ENEMIES! The Russian Revolution

  18. The Russian Revolution • Even thought Stalin’s methods were brutal and his power was unquestioned, he was able to lead The Soviet Union into a period of prosperity. The USSR was one of the most powerful industrial nations by the 1940s… the Space Race.
