GMOs Advantages • If properly regulated • Remove/prevent disease in some foods • Food can be designed to last longer on the shelf; less waste • Convenience • Improve the nutritional value of some foods Disadvantages • Doesn’t actually increase yields (over time, destroys fields) • Encourage the use of herbicides and pesticides (round-up ready seeds) • Contracts between farmers and Monsanto don’t allow crop circulation or to keep seeds; seeds are engineered to not produce more seeds • Bad effects on the body (carcinogens=cancer-causing agent, birth defects) • Engineered genes can be passed to other organisms (superweeds) • Organic farms near farms that use GMOs - genes transferred to their crops
