  6. 1.1 You Are Part of The System • Regulating the HTS (Highway Transportation System) • Drivers – Most Important • Federal Agencies – develop the traffic safety guidelines • State Agencies (State Police)- Enforce Laws • Local Agencies (Aurora Police) – Enforce Laws • Vehicle Code Book – federal and state laws that regulate the HTS

  7. 1.2 Your Driving Task • Your Driving Task consists of three parts • Social Skills – interacting with other drivers • Physical Skills – ability to control your car • Mental (Decision-Making) Skills – involves decision making skills

  8. 1.2 Your Driving Task • Social Skills • You must interact with people successfully • You must obey laws • You must cooperate with others • You must be courteous to others

  9. 1.2 Your driving Task • Physical Skills • Your handling the car must become a habit • New drivers must concentrate on the physical part of driving, heavily • After a lot of practice habits develop and you can focus on the social and mental parts of driving

  11. 1.2 Your Driving Task • Mental Skills • Decision Making • You will learn how to use the IPDE Process to become successful at making decisions while driving • You must become a defensive driver to protect you from dangerous driving situations

  12. 1.2 Your Driving Task • The IPDE Process • Identify • Important information in the ongoing driving scene • Predict • When and where the conflicts will develop • Decide • When, where and how to communicate, adjust speed and/or change position to avoid conflict • Execute • The right action(s) to prevent conflict • The Smith System and Zone Control are two examples of systems that apply the IPDE

  13. 1.3 Your Driving Responsibilities • Driving is a Privilege – not a right • The keys are in your hands – you must obey traffic laws, be responsible and respect having a driver’s license • Three Parts you are in control of • Attitude • Knowledge • Skills
