  1. Lights Out for Extracurricular Activities By Ryan Evans

  2. National Problem • Athletic budget cuts are happening in many states across the nation. • Some states effected seeing budget cuts in athletics: California, Florida, South Carolina, and Ohio. • Junior High programs are being cuts as well

  3. Making the Cut • States are seeing a seeing a shortfall in taxes • Schools are seeing a shortfall in funding • Because the state do not have the funds. (It is the “snowball” effect.) • Schools are to educate students so academics have top priority over athletics.

  4. Making the Cut cont. • Communities voting down levies and tax overrides. • People feel schools need to do a better job budgeting instead of asking for more money

  5. Repercussions • Students are just students not student athletes. • Parents separating so their children can participate in extracurricular activities in another school district. • Students filling for emancipation from their parents so they can live in other school districts where their activities are offered.

  6. Repercussions cont. • Communities “dieing” out. • Homes for sale going up and home buyers going down. • People move out of the school district.
