Salinger • Born January 1, 1919 • died January 27, 2010 2010 • Wrote short stories as a young man • Published Catcher in the Rye in 1951 • Published less and less – last piece in 1965 • He lived in Austria until a month before it was taken over by Germany in 1938 • Interviewed concentration camp survivors after the war for U.S. Army • Led to nervous breakdown

  3. J.D. Salinger • Was born a Jew, but became interested in Buddhism in the 1940s • He also experimented with Hindu yoga, Scientology, Christian Science and the paranormal • A fan of alternative medicine • "I almost always write about very young people.”

  4. The Early 1950s • World War II ended in 1945 • American sense of optimism, consumerism • Korean War 1950-53: USA, South Korea, UK vs. North Korea and China • Society was changing rapidly • Teenagers were becoming disaffected • Development of rock n’ roll music – very rebellious

  5. Character: Holden Caulfield • Fifteen year old boy • Has flunked out of his third boarding school • His father is a prominent lawyer • Older brother is D.B. (Hollywood writer) • Younger sister is Phoebe • Anti-hero: he is the protagonist of the story but we don’t necessarily sympathize with him • Like most heroes, he is on a journey (physical and mental)

  6. Themes • Alientation: young people feel detached and excluded from society • Confusion: how does Holden fit in to society? • Sexuality: Holden is coming to terms with his interest in girls and sex • Rebellion: Holden constantly disappoints his parents and defies their expectations

  7. Controversy! • Book was banned in many school districts for many years • Profane and vulgar language • Holden hires a prostitute • He stalks a girl • He smokes, drinks and lie • He defies his parents • A teacher appears to make an advance at him

  8. Quick Write: • Write a paragraph about an incident in which you defied your parents. What was the issue? How did your parents react? How did you resolve the issue?
