Mastering Policy Debate: Tips for Success in Cross-Examination Format

Join us for an engaging policy debate event where two teams of students will compete by arguing different sides of a given resolution. Each round consists of constructive speeches followed by cross-examination, rebuttals, and further questioning. Teams will have 8 minutes for constructs and rebuttal preparation, with each speaker delivering around 16 minutes of arguments. Participants will need to analyze topics, write persuasive cases, and procure substantial evidence.   2. The Event • Two students debate another team of two students. (This is a policy debate)

  3. Time • Constructive • Affirmative- 8 minutes • CX- 3 minutes • Negative- 8 minutes • CX- 3 minutes • Affirmative – 8 minutes • CX- 3 minutes • Negative- 8 minutes

  4. Time • Rebuttal • Neg- 5 minutes • Aff- 5 minutes • Neg- 5 minutes • Aff- 5 minutes • Each team will get 8 minutes preparation • Each speaker will speak for around 16 minutes

  5. Preparation • Find a partner • Analyze the topic (resolution) • Write cases • You will have to debate both sides of a topic. YOU WILL NEED TO FIND A LOT OF EVIDENCE!
