  1. KM3NeT-IT The Capo Passero Infrastructure M.Anghinolfi –INFN-Genova

  2. The present status • Shore station: • Harbor of Porto Palo • 150 km from Catania • electrical supply up to 800 kVA • UPS up to up t 159 kVA • fibre connection at 1 Gbps to LNS • communication is inserted inside the GARR-X network • Main cable: • Length (Km): 100 • Max Voltage: 10 kV DC • Max Current: 8 Amp • Number of fibres: 20 • Site: • 36° 16’ N, 16° 06’ E, • about 40 NM from the coast • depth of 3350 m;

  3. What we have NOW • Tower • 8 Floor 8m length , 40 m spacing • 4 10” PMTs per floor • Power Supply • Output voltage: 0-10 kV DC • Output current: 0 -5 A • Cable termination frame • Unfolds the main cable to 3 ROV matable output ports • converts the supplied voltage (-10 kV DC) to 375V DC up to 10kW • 8 out of the 20 optic fibres of the main cable are available at the 3 outputs • 8 floor tower connected to one output on march 2013

  4. Sea operations • In 2013 two major sea campaigns took place in the site of Capo Passero. Both of them were carried out by the MTS/FUGRO Chance Company. • March 22 - 23 was dedicated to the deployment of the first DU, • July 18-20 and was dedicated to a full survey and a subsea mapping

  5. SITE Characteristics • Continuous monitoring since March 2013 • Mean 1 pe counting rate on 10”PMTs: ~ 50/65 kHz • Burst fraction (>100kHz): 1-2 % • bio sound continuous monitoring • Sea current velocity: low to moderate (average 2-3 cm/s)

  6. KM3-IT PHASE 1. • PON Poject: • Funded by 20 MEuro to be spent before November 2014 • Aimed to the realization of a sea bed infrastructure and a first DU block in the site • compatible to the available 8.5 kW power and exploiting the 20 optic fibres • composed by: • 8 towers a la NEMO (14 floors with 6 10” PMTs per foor) • 24 strings with 18 DOMs • Sea bed network to connect to the DUs composed by: • NEW Cable Termination with 5 outputs • Interlink cables • 4 Secondary Junction Boxes : • 1 SJB for the 8 towers • 2 SJBs for 12+ 12 strings • 1 SJB for EMSO

  7. The Layout CTF: Cable Termination (Frame) : Secondary Junction boxes : Tower DU : String DU EMSO node • Result from various compromises: • Sea deployment operations constraints • Optimized detection efficiency • DC/DC converter power limitation (8.8 kWatt) • Uncertainty on the schedule of the NEW Cable Termination

  8. PPM DU

  9. Installation sequence

  10. The New Cable termination frame: • Three companies contacted : ALCATEL, L3-MARIPRO, SEACON. • Likely not available before mid 2015 • The Secondary Junction boxes (SJBs): • Serve a group of up to 12 detection units • Include three pods with different functionality: • a power pod (JPP)to manage the power supply towards the DUs • an optic pod(JOP) to manage the optical data flux. • an electronic pod( EP) for the control and the monitoring of the system • Modular design to optimize the assembly • Will be assembled locally • The cabling • Includes the cables from the CFT to each SJB and from the SJB to each detection unit. • Tender is ongoing: Ocean Design and SEACON companies contacted

  11. The Secondary Junction Box Layout ROV mate connectors The manifold The threepower, control and opticalvessels design completed Dry connectors & Internal cabling ordered Power boards designed and produced, to be qualified Control boards designed ordered Optical Components partially ordered Mechanics support designed

  12. Optical network Preliminary design available Optical budget evaluated and Full simulation of the network planned Some optical components alredy ordered?? Available in ?? Differenzerispetto a MEUST?? Solo connettori al posto di splices?

  13. Power network • DC power network, up to 10 kV max DC monopolarpower transmission system from shore to MVC • 375V bipolar power distribution system from MVC to DUs and floors. • The Secondary JB hosts the system to distribute, monitor and control the power coming from the MVC to the DU. Its main features are: • Distribution of 375 V coming from the MVC to the DUs and monitoring of all electrical parameters, • Voltage conversion from 375 V to low voltages required by all the electrical loads, • Remotely operated switches in all the output lines with a soft start system (100ms controlled voltage ramp), • Output short circuit protection, • Time-out system that automatically actuate all the switches of the output lines in case of loss of communication, • Output lines current threshold remotely settable and Autonomous switch off for over current threshold. • Boards are in production. • Redesign of the DC/DC converter in VEOC to increase input voltage range. Design redy, first prototype ready on March, • Power network calculations done and cable sizing done (tender ongoing) • Full simulation of the network underway

  14. Sea operations • The deployment of the sea bed network and the first block of DU will be assigned to a private Company by a public tender. • The activity will start in 2014 with the deployment of the test string and continue with the seafloor network, followed by the installation of 8 towers and 24 strings. • Preferred operational period in the Ionian Sea is between March and October. • All in all 11 Marine operations are planned with an overall 50 days offshore operation. This includes contingency for e.g. bad weather planning. • Tender procedure started: invitation sent, will be assigned on January, 21

  15. Milestones PPM DOM deployment & connection : April 2014 Installazione manifold : autunno 2014 (ott-nov) Installazione JB (solo 2): autunno 2014 (ott-nov) Fornitura cavi interlink (entro nv 2014 - da contratto) Installazione delle torri (non ancora definito - ma nn capisco cosa interessi questa cosa agli altri)

  16. Costs • Deep sea infrastructure : • Secondary JB (SJB) including interlink cables to DUs: 0.8 x 5 = 4.0 • Interlink cables from CTF to SBJs: 0.3 • New CTF (estimates): 0.7 • TOTAL 5.0 • Towers • 8 x 0.68 = 5.5 • TOTAL 5.5 • Sea Operations: • indicative for the installation of the full sea bed infrastructure and the 8 + 24 DUs deployment of the sea infrastructure DUs: 1.5 • Deployment of the DUs :1.5 • TOTAL 3.0
