  2. What’s the difference? NON-INFECTIOUS DISEASE InfectiOUS DISEASE You CAN catch itfromanotherperson (blood, bacteria, air-borne, sexuallytransmitted, etc…) Contagious Not heriditary • You can’t catch itfromanotherperson • Not contagious • Some of thesediseases are heriditary

  3. What are the similarities? • Can affect people of anyage • Can affect a person’sphysicalhealth (cause a part of a person’s body to not work right) • Can affect a person’s mental health • Can affect a person’s social health • Can affect us in economicalways (cost money)

  4. Non-infectiousdiseases • Asthma • allergies • diabetes • Heartdisease • cancer • arthritis • epilepsy • Multiple sclerosis • Anorexia, bulimia

  5. InfectiousDiseases • Food poisoning • Measles • ChickenPox • Cold • Nile Virus • E.coli virus • Mononucleosis (Mono) • Warts • Influenza (flu), H1N1

Assignment • Research FOUR diseases (twoinfectious and two non-infectious) • For eachdisease, find: • Whatis the disease ( create a definition in your OWN words) • How isittransmitted, and if not, how isitdevelopped? • What are the 3 symptons on the body? • Whatcanbedone to prevent or lessen the chances of gettingthisdisease (medication, protection, habits, healthchoice, etc…)? If not, how do youtreatit. (3)

Sharing your research • When it’s your turn, present ONE infectious and ONE non-infectious disease to your group. • When you are not presenting, you will need to take notes on what your group members are saying! For ONE of the diseases that is presented to you, write a short summary of what you’ve learned. • For ex: “Malaria – I learned that it is transmitted through mosquito bites. It can give you fever, chills and even kill you. It’s common in Africa and South America.”

  9. Assignment • Create a color poster that shows FOUR ways to prevent infectious 0r non-infectious diseases • Underneath, write a paragraph explaining your FOUR drawings For ex: “One way to prevent infectious diseases is to wash your hands because bacteria is transmitted through touch. Another way is to eat healthy because….”
