  1. Amphibians Please make 1 C-note!

  2. C-Note from Video Clip • 3 Main Amphibian Characteristics • Vertebrates (backbone) • Cold-blooded • Need water to survive

  3. Unique Characteristics • Amphibian skin is permeable. This allows for water and oxygen to move through it. This trait also allows amphibians to breathe and absorb water through the skin from the surrounding environment. Amphibians must live in wet and/or humid conditions to keep their skin moist. • Amphibians are also cold blooded animals which means they do not have a constant body temperature but take on the temperature of their surroundings.

  4. C-Note • How do amphibians breathe? • Permeable • Cold blooded • Skin and lungs • Amphibian skin allows for exchange of oxygen and water • Body temperature is not constant - takes on the temperature of the surrounding environment.

  5. Amphibian Life Cycle • The egg is the first step in an amphibian’s life cycle. The female lays her eggs in a body of water often near clumps of plants for protection. • The eggs then hatch into tadpoles. Tadpoles in no way resemble adult amphibians and have a tail instead of legs, gills instead of lungs, and are dependent on water. • Eventually the tadpoles develops legs and lungs and enter the last stage of the life cycle, as an adult amphibian.

  6. C-Note from Text and Video • Amphibian Life Cycle • Egg • Tadpoles • Adult • 1. Egg, 2. Tadpole, 3. Adult • Laid in water by plants for protection • Gills instead of lungs, a tail instead of legs, and are dependent on water. • Lungs, legs

  7. Your turn!Watch the following video (15 minutes). Write down 4 main ideas (on the left) and notes about each on the right. Be sure the main ideas are not already in your notes.

  8. Amphibian • Smallest class of vertebrates • Live on both land and water • Salamanders, newts, toads, frogs • Frog vs. Toad • Frog skin-smooth, wet; Toad skin-dry, bumpy • Frog hind legs-long, jumping; Toad hind legs-short, hopping

  9. Predators • Turtles • Big fish • Birds • Snakes • Adaptations • Hibernate • Strong hind legs • Webbed hind feet • 3rd eyelid to help see underwater
