  1. Before the bell rings… • Have a seat and clear everything off your desk except a pencil.

  2. What is science? • Look in the dictionary… • What is the difference between social and natural science?

  3. What is unique about mathematics? • It is a universal language… considered the “purest” science.

  4. The main branches of Natural Science… • Physics • Chemistry • Biology

  5. What makes Environmental Science? Earth Science Ecology

  6. Use the following Vocabulary in the upcoming pictures. • Ecosystem • Oceanography • Geology • Astronomy • Geosphere • Hydrosphere • Meteorology

  7. Use the following Vocabulary in the upcoming pictures. • Ecosystem • Oceanography • Geology • Astronomy • Geosphere • Hydrosphere • Meteorology

  8. Use the following Vocabulary in the upcoming pictures. • Ecosystem • Oceanography • Geology • Astronomy • Geosphere • Hydrosphere • Meteorology

  9. Use the following Vocabulary in the upcoming pictures. • Ecosystem • Oceanography • Geology • Astronomy • Geosphere • Hydrosphere • Meteorology

  10. Use the following Vocabulary in the upcoming pictures. • Ecosystem • Oceanography • Geology • Astronomy • Geosphere • Hydrosphere • Meteorology

  11. Use the following Vocabulary in the upcoming pictures. • Ecosystem • Oceanography • Geology • Astronomy • Geosphere • Hydrosphere • Meteorology

  12. Team of Scientists • Typically we need a team of scientists to solve problems and answer questions in science. • Let us consider the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Mission from 2005… • Rovers Spirit and Opportunity

  13. Images from Mars…What do they tell us about what types of scientists were needed?

  14. Scientific Method (5 Steps!) • Can be applied to any problem, no matter how simple. • State the Problem • Gather Info • Form a Hypothesis • Test the Hypothesis • Control and a variable • State the Conclusion • Do we have a Theory? How is this different from a Law • Examples?

  15. Examination of Meteorite Impact Hypothesis Video

  16. How do we know it happened? • State the Problem- How did the dinosaurs go extinct? • Gather Info- Look for meteorite impact areas? Other Causes? • Form a Hypothesis- Meteor hit the Yucatan Peninsula because high levels of iridium and deformed quartz. • Test the Hypothesis- Check for iridium in soils • Control- test random soil samples around the Earth • Variable- test soil at impact site • State the Conclusion • 100x’s iridium levels, impact crater, caverns = MIH (Meteorite Impact Hypothesis)

  17. Barringer Crater in AZ 4000 Feet in diameter created by a meteorite approximately 50 meters across. Real Meteor Video

  18. Review Time…
