  2. Warsaw • Warsaw is the capital of Poland. • This was one of the ghettos Jews were put at. • There was 337,000 Jews put in the Warsaw ghetto on the eve of WW2. • In March 1941 the population rose up to 445,000 people. • Warsaw had an area of 54 square miles.

  3. Historic Background • The Warsaw ghetto was established in October 12, 1940. • Jews lived there from the 15th century to the 19th century. • The Warsaw Jewish community is the largest in Poland and Europe. • It was the second largest In the world under New York.

  4. Historic Background • In 1941the average Jew survived on 1,125 calories a day. • 1940-1942 83,000 died of starvation and disease. • September 1, 1939 Warsaw suffered heavy air attacks and artillery bombs. • Within a month they had surrounded the whole city.

Historic Background • 28 of September1939, Germans surrounded the city on all sides and fired heavy artillery which caused a lot of damage. • 23 November 1939, All Jewish people were to where a white armband with a blue star of David. Jewish shops had to be marked, couldn’t travel by train, and radios were confiscated. • November 1940 they sealed off city.

  6. Historic Background • In 1943 70,000 to 80,000 Jews were deported to death camps. • April 19 1943,new SS and police force appeared outside the ghetto walls, intending to destroy the ghetto • 7,000 Jews died trying to fight or hide from Nazi’s.
