  1. Hoot By:Carl Hiaasen Ethan Brower

  2. About the author • Carl Hiaasen was born in Florida. • Carl Hiaasen graduated from the university of Florida at age 23. • In the early 1980’s he began writing with his friend. • Other books he wrote are, Flush,The Downhill Lie, and Nature Girl

  3. Setting • The setting takes place in Coconut Cove Florida. • It takes place in present day.

  4. Characters • Roy Eberhardt:He’s main character in the story. His family has been all over the country and he is always the new kid. • Mullet Fingers AKA Napoleon Bridger:He has been rejected by his own mother and his only friend is his sister. He is the first to step up and protect the owls. • Beatrice Leep: She is the sister of Mullet fingers. She plays soccer and protects Mullet Fingers. • Officer Delinko: He is a young police officer that hopes that someday he will become a detective. • Dana Matherson:He bullies Roy.

  5. Plot • Roy is a normal kid but is bullied by Dana Matherson. • One day he sees a boy running. When he jumps off the bus to chase the boy he bumps into a girl named Beatrice Leep. • She says to mind your own business, but eventually takes Roy to the running boy. • Roy finds out that the running boy’s name is Mullet Fingers. He later finds out that Mullet Fingers is trying to save Burrowing Owls effected by the construction of the new Mother Paula's Pancake House. • He protects the owls by vandalizing the construction site but is never caught. • Eventually the manger of the construction site must call in a police officer named officer Delinko who is a very important character in the story.

  6. Conflict • Roy vs. Dana: Roy must deal with the bully Dana while he has a lot of other things to worry about. • Curly vs. Mullet Fingers: Mullet fingers must vandalize the property to save the owls while Curly must try to find the vandal.

  7. Theme • Treat others the way you want to be treated. • This theme best represents the story because it shows how Roy was treated by Dana and how Mullet Fingers was treated by his mother.

  8. Book Review • I definitely recommend this book.It is very good and filled with action. It also has a lot of suspense that will want you to keep reading. It is also long so I would recommend this to an older kid. This book would also be good for some young adults.Overall I give this book a 3 out of 5 stars.
