  1. HOOT WEBQUEST What do you give a hoot about?

Welcome, students!  If you're here, that probably means you've read Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen.  What a great story!This Web Quest will give you the opportunity to use technology tools and resources in order to: * show how much you know about this novel * learn more about burrowing owls * read poems about owls * watch short videos of burrowing owls * play online endangered animals games * read about Maryland animal or plant that needs our protection • construct an information sheet that describes a Maryland animal that is endangered or threatened * design a crossword puzzle to help your peers have fun while learning about your plant or animal * learn more about Cottonmouth Moccasins and the American Alligator. * find out what you can do to help threatened and endangered species

  3. Materials you will need… You will need to use a journal to record your work for each activity. You can create a journal by stapling several sheets of notebook paper together and decorating a cover for your journal pages.

  4. Test Your Knowledge Activity #1 How well do you think you know the Hoot story?  Put on your thinking caps and get out your Web Quest Journal.  Heading for today:  "Hoot Web Quest, Activity #1, today's date."  Number your page from 1-8.  Answer each question in complete sentences. Make sure you record the heading, activity number, and date for each new activity. HOOT

  5. Hoot Questions • How do you know that Roy was determined to find the running boy? Use evidence from the text to support your response. • Explain how Roy’s family is different from Beatrice/Mullet Fingers’ family. What influence do you think the characters’ families had on their actions? • Throughout much of the book, Roy feels like an outsider. What finally makes him feel that he belongs in Florida?

  6. KEEP YOUR THINKING CAPS ON 4. Dana Matherson bullies Roy, but other characters act as bullies too. Who are they and who are their targets? 5. What is one way to deal with bullies in real life? 6. Mullet Fingers vandalized the construction site and the patrol car. Was he justified in doing this? Explain why or why not.

Do you think there is a correlation between Mullet Fingers’ family life and his desire to save the owls? Explain. 8. Explain why Mother Paula’s Pancakes “lose” the Environmental Impact Statement? You will find this one in the epilogue.
