  1. Webquest Stereotypes and Prejudices: raisingawareness. A Non-discriminationcampaign

  2. Introduction: Stereotypes and prejudices • Stereotypes are beliefs about people based on their membership in a particular group. • They can be positive, negative, or neutral. • Stereotypes are based on gender, ethnicity, or occupation are common in many societies.

  3. Prejudices: • A prejudice is a negative belief or feeling about a particular group or individuals. • They are often passed on from one generation to the next.

  4. Urbantribes: • In a search of identity, many teenagers tend to join into different urban tribes. • According to Michel Maffesoli (1988), urban tribes are microgroups of people who share common interests in metropolitan areas. • The members of these groups tend to have similar worldviews, dress styles and behavioral patterns. • These “sub-cultures” suffer from stereotypes and prejudices constructed by the “outsiders” of these groups.

  5. 1. Task: • You are part of a non-discrimination campaign. • You are in charge of designing a non-discrimination advertisement to raise awareness about the negative effects stereotypes in society. • In groups, look for information in the net about stereotypes and prejudices commonly present in your society. • Think about characteristics, functions, dangers, examples, etc.

  6. 2. Process: • Go to the different web sites, and look for the information you need. • Once you have read it, decide on the stereotypes you want to show, and a creative means to depict them. • Use images, texts, videos (if you want you can record your own videos), statistics, etc. • Try to find the best way to raise consciousness in society.

  8. 3. Evaluation: • You can use a Power Point presentation, or Publisher to present your ad. • You will show your ad to the class • We will discuss which stereotype you were targeting & why you feel it is important to design a non – descrimination advertiement to raise awareness for that particular group.

  9. 4. Conclusion: • Think of other ways of raising awareness about this controversial but common problem in society (leaflets, posters, radio comercial, workshops, etc.). • Write a summary about how you would like to raise awareness in society. (4 – 5 sentences) • Turn this in with your advertisement • Make sure ALL OF YOUR NAMES are on BOTH PIECES OF PAPER! Staple both things together and TURN IT IN!
