  1. Standards Overview Conclusion WEBQUEST Introduction Tasks Process Evaluation

  2. OVERVIEW ABC is piloting a new series in the fall called “Science Survivor.” The reality show will be similar to “Survivor.” The show’s producers have just hired you as a member of the TV crew.

  3. INTRODUCTION The executives at ABC need science expertsto evaluate the challenging science concepts contestants will explore, safety expertsto ensure that no one is hurt, and task design expertsto develop the challenging new tasks for the contestants. The first episode will require contestants to demonstrate their knowledge about chemical and physical changes.

  4. Science Experts • As the Science Experts it will be your job to evaluate the tasks selected by the design team. You will be deciding if the tasks demonstrate a chemical or physical change. Provide feedback to the design team about methods to enhance the quality of their tasks. It will also be important to confer with the safety team. • Visit these sites to check the scientific accuracy of the design team. • Chem4Kids • Leaves change colors • Chemical & Physical Changes Science Rocks!

  5. Safety Experts • As the Safety Experts it will be your job to evaluate each of the tasks for safety. You will be deciding if the tasks demonstrate safe and proper techniques for working with chemicals, science tools, and laboratory safety. Provide feedback to the design team about changes that need to be made to address safety concerns. It will also be important to confer with the science experts. • Visit these links to become a Science Safety Expert! • Science Safety Website • Elementary Science Safety PowerPoint • Basic Lab Safety Rules

  6. Design Experts • As the Design Team it will be your job to create tasks for the contestants to compete in. You will create a minimum of two tasks, one illustrating a chemical change and one illustrating a physical change. You will set the parameters of the tasks and decide on the materials which will be used. It will be necessary for you to meet with members of the Science and Safety teams and make revisions based on their suggestions. • Visit these sites to gather ideas: • Sample Chemical Changes • Chemical & Physical Changes • Video Clips of Reactions

  7. PROCESS Step 1 Design Team will meet and begin developing 3 tasks for the show. This group will meet prior to all other groups. Step 3 Suggestions for revisions or stamp of approval on each task will be submitted to the Design Team. Design Team will make necessary revisions. Step 2 Design Team will share their ideas with the Safety and Science Experts. These two groups will independently evaluate each task created by the design team. On to Evaluation

  8. EVALUATION • Students will be evaluated using the following areas: • Background Research • Laboratory Work • Scientific Observation • Cooperative Groups • Relating Concepts • Experimental Research • Students will complete a post project interview with the teacher. Please download and complete a self-evaluation prior to conferencing with the teacher. On to Conclusion

  9. CONCLUSION Now that you have created the tasks for this new game show, it is only fair that you become the contestants on the show. Each team will compete to demonstrate their ability to become the ultimate Science Survivor. You will complete each of the tasks you designed in class. Out Practice…Out Think …

  10. STANDARDS Focus Standard S5P2. Students will explain the difference between a physical change and a chemical change. • a. Investigate physical changes by separating mixtures and manipulating (cutting, tearing, folding) paper to demonstrate examples of physical change. • b. Recognize that the changes in state of water (water vapor/steam, liquid, ice) are due to temperature differences and are examples of physical change. • c. Investigate the properties of a substance before, during, and after a chemical reaction to find evidence of change. Related Standards S5CS2. Students will have the computation and estimation skills necessary for analyzing data and following scientific explanations S5CS3. Students will use tools and instruments for observing, measuring, and manipulating objects in scientific activities. S5CS5. Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly. S5CS8. Students will understand important features of the process of scientific inquiry.
