  4. Halloween in America • Limited celebration in New England, more widely celebrated in South. • Irish immigrants popularized Halloween • By 20th century Halloween lost most of its “scary” aspects.

  5. Modern American Halloween • By the 1920’s and 30’s Halloween became secularized. • From 1920’s to 50’s led to the growth of trick-or-treating. • Treats were used to prevent vandalism.

  6. Evolution of Trick-or-Treating • Celts left food for evil spirits, dressing up was to scare evil spirits away. • Trick-or-Treating was originally for poor people that would beg for food or money at this time. • Recently, communities come together to celebrate

Pumpkins • From the gourd family, natively from Meso-America. • Have been grown for over 5,000 years in America. • In 1584, Jacques Cartier a French explorer described pumpkins when going exploring the St. Lawrence Sea way. • Carving pumpkins comes from old Celtic tradition of lighting candles to lead good spirits back home from spirit world.

  8. What is Halloween now? • All stores merchandize for Halloween • Some stores are only open for Halloween • Six billion dollars annually spent on Halloween, second most spending on holiday other than Christmas • Have to buy costumes, candy and decorations. • What does this mean?
