Meet the colon • A colon looks like one period over the other : • Not to be confused with his half brother, the semicolon, which looks like a winky face ; • A colon is placed at the end of a sentence to indicate that what follows elaborates on the idea presented in the sentence. • May be followed by a single word, phrase, sentence, or list

  3. Example- wOrd • Rewrite this sentence with the period replaced by a colon and the word rude written after the colon. • There is only one word for Ted’s behavior at dinner. • Answer? There is only one word for Ted’s behavior at dinner: rude. • This shows how a single word can follow a colon.

  4. Example- phrase • Rewrite the following sentence with a colon placed in the right position. • The candidate’s press secretary responded confidently to questions on the election’s hottest issue how to save the social security system. • Answer: The candidate’s press secretary responded confidently to questions on the election’s hottest issue: how to save the social security system. • The colon is placed between the initial sentence and the explanatory phrase

Subject: YOU Verb Phrase: WILL NEED Object: two bags of Twizzlers, pajamas, and your copy of Dazed and Confused. A simpler form of this is: You will need: Twizzlers. (Incorrect)
