Cont • It was the first antislavery party. • The party sought to achieve abolitionist goals through political means • Its first presidential candidate was a former Alabama slave holder, James G. Birney (1840- 6,797 votes & 1844-Because of better local organization and the issue of the annexation of Texas, he polled more than 60,000 votes) • A candidate has never won an election.
Free Soil Party • The Free Soil Party was a short-lived political party, active in the 1848 and 1852 presidential elections. • It was a third party and a single-issue party that drew its greatest strength from New York State. • Martin Van Buren was the first candidate to run under free soil party/ John P. Hale for the second. • Its main purpose was opposing the expansion of slavery into the western territories, arguing that free men on free soil comprised a morally and economically superior system to slavery
Cont. • They opposed slavery in the new territories and sometimes worked to remove existing laws that discriminated against freed African Americans in states such as Ohio. • Free Soil candidates ran on the platform that declared: "...we inscribe on our banner, 'Free Soil, Free Speech, Free Labor and Free Men,' and under it we will fight on and fight ever, until a triumphant victory shall reward our exertions."
