  2. Advances in Medicine • Germ Theory & Diseases • Anton V. Leeuwenhoek discovered microbes • Louis Pasteur showed link between the diseases and microbes (germs). He also showed that certain germs could be used to treat diseases. • Robert Koch showed Bacteria causing TB • Pasteur’s and Koch’s Ideas were established as Germ Theory Br. Siraj

  3. Advances in Medicine • Infections and Antiseptics • Joseph Lister believed germs cause infections during surgical procedures. • He insisted on using antiseptics • Antibiotics • The discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming helped kill germs Br. Siraj

Improved Standard of Living • Better wages and Working Conditions • Labor unions and civil society reform groups pushed for better wages and safer working conditions during the later 1880s. • Better Housing • Improved Sanitation • Running Water and Underground Sewerage helped prevent waterborne diseases like Cholera and Dysentry.
