  3. LENGTH Mile A mile is equivalent to 1609.344 m. 1 mile = 1.6 km Miles are often used to measure long distances where we would use kilometers in Spain. For instance, distance between cities is measured in miles. Car speed is also measured in miles per hour (mph).

  5. LENGTH Yard A yard (abbreviation: yd) is the basic unit of length used in the UK and the USA. One yard is equal to 0.9144 meters. One meter is equal to 1.094 yards. “He missed the shot by less than a yard” “My house is only a couple hundred yards away”

  7. LENGTH A foot (abbreviation: ft) is defined as a third of a yard. 1 yard = 3 feet 1 foot = 0.9144 m : 3 = 0.3048 m = 30.48 cm Feet are divided in inches. There are twelve inches in one foot. 1 foot = 12 inches 1 yard = 36 inches 1 inch = 2.54 cm Feet

  13. MASS Pound A pound (abb.: lb) is an unit of weight with a long history. The word pound comes from the Latin word pendere, meaning “to weigh”. The Latin word libra means balance and it also describes a Roman unit of mass similar to a pound. This is the origin of the abbreviation “lb” for the pound. One pound is equal to exactly 453.59237 grams. We round it by 453.6 g. Sometimes, we can estimate 1 lb = ½ kg

  14. MASS Ounce There are sixteen ounces (oz.)in one pound. 16 oz. = 1 lb 1 oz. = 453.6 : 16 = 28.35 g Ounces are frequently used in grocery stores and supermarkets.

  15. MASS Stone A stone (st) is an unit of weight and mass, equal to 14 pounds. 1 st = 14 lb = 6.35 kg It is used to express human body weight (only in the UK and Ireland). Example: John weighs 11 st 4 lb. John weighs 158 pounds. John weighs 71.7 kg.

  16. MASS Exercise 4 We want to buy some fruit in the supermarket. The price of one pound is $2.50 What is the price of 1 kg? We have bought 2 lb 6 oz. How much do we have to pay?

  19. VOLUME A gallon is an unit of volume. Its exact value depends on wether we are in the UK or the USA. Gallon 1 US gallon = 3.785 litres 1 UK gallon = 4.546 litres.

  20. VOLUME 1 quart = ¼ gallon 16 US fl.oz.= 1 pint 1 pint = ½ quart 1 US fl.oz. = 29.6 ml 1 pint = 473 ml 1 quart = 946 ml

  21. VOLUME Exercise 6 In the picture you can see the price of one gallon of gas. 1 gallon = $ 3.47 In Spain, one liter of gas costs 1.42 € Is gas more expensive or cheaper in the US? How much?

  22. VOLUME Exercise 7 In the picture you can see the average mileage of an US car. 1 gallon = 40.2 miles In Europe we measure the mileage the other way around: 100 km = 4.5 liters Can you convert that mileage into liters per 100 km?

  25. AREA Acre The acre is a unit of area. One acre is equal to 4.84 squared yards or 43.56 squared feet. One acre is, more or less, a football field. 1 acre = 4047 m2 1 acre = 0.4047 ha

  27. TEMPERATURE Temperature can be measured in Fahrenheit degrees. For example, the weather forecast can predict a maximum temperature of 85 ºF in a nice spring day. 0º C = 32 ºF 100 ºC = 212 ºF.
