  1. MEASURE&UNITS

  2. LENGTH Mile

  3. LENGTH Mile A mile is equivalent to 1609.344 m. 1 mile = 1.6 km Miles are often used to measure long distances where we would use kilometers in Spain. For instance, distance between cities is measured in miles. Car speed is also measured in miles per hour (mph).

  4. LENGTH Yard

  5. LENGTH Yard A yard (abbreviation: yd) is the basic unit of length used in the UK and the USA. One yard is equal to 0.9144 meters. One meter is equal to 1.094 yards. “He missed the shot by less than a yard” “My house is only a couple hundred yards away”

  6. LENGTH Feet

  7. LENGTH A foot (abbreviation: ft) is defined as a third of a yard. 1 yard = 3 feet 1 foot = 0.9144 m : 3 = 0.3048 m = 30.48 cm Feet are divided in inches. There are twelve inches in one foot. 1 foot = 12 inches 1 yard = 36 inches 1 inch = 2.54 cm Feet

  8. LENGTH Exercise 1 What is the speed limit in kilometers per hour? What is the actual speed of the car?

  9. LENGTH Exercise 2 We see this sign at one side of the road. What does it mean?

  10. LENGTH Exercise 3 Pau Gasol and Ricky Rubio are two Spanish basketball players. Pau is a very tall man. He is 7 ft. tall. Ricky is only 6 ft. 4 in. tall. Therefore, Pau is 8 inches taller than Ricky. How much is that in meters? How tall are you?

  11. LENGTH Exercise 3: How tall are you? I am 165 cm tall 165 : 30 = 5 remainder =15 5 feet 15 : 2.5 = 6 inches I am 5 ft. 6 in. tall

  12. MASS

  13. MASS Pound A pound (abb.: lb) is an unit of weight with a long history. The word pound comes from the Latin word pendere, meaning “to weigh”. The Latin word libra means balance and it also describes a Roman unit of mass similar to a pound. This is the origin of the abbreviation “lb” for the pound. One pound is equal to exactly 453.59237 grams. We round it by 453.6 g. Sometimes, we can estimate 1 lb = ½ kg

  14. MASS Ounce There are sixteen ounces (oz.)in one pound. 16 oz. = 1 lb 1 oz. = 453.6 : 16 = 28.35 g Ounces are frequently used in grocery stores and supermarkets.

  15. MASS Stone A stone (st) is an unit of weight and mass, equal to 14 pounds. 1 st = 14 lb = 6.35 kg It is used to express human body weight (only in the UK and Ireland). Example: John weighs 11 st 4 lb. John weighs 158 pounds. John weighs 71.7 kg.

  16. MASS Exercise 4 We want to buy some fruit in the supermarket. The price of one pound is $2.50 What is the price of 1 kg? We have bought 2 lb 6 oz. How much do we have to pay?

  17. MASS Exercise 5 How many stones are in 112 pounds? How many ounces are there in 3 lb? Complete: ½ lb = ___ ounces ¼ lb = ___ ounces

  18. VOLUME

  19. VOLUME A gallon is an unit of volume. Its exact value depends on wether we are in the UK or the USA. Gallon 1 US gallon = 3.785 litres 1 UK gallon = 4.546 litres.

  20. VOLUME 1 quart = ¼ gallon 16 US fl.oz.= 1 pint 1 pint = ½ quart 1 US fl.oz. = 29.6 ml 1 pint = 473 ml 1 quart = 946 ml

  21. VOLUME Exercise 6 In the picture you can see the price of one gallon of gas. 1 gallon = $ 3.47 In Spain, one liter of gas costs 1.42 € Is gas more expensive or cheaper in the US? How much?

  22. VOLUME Exercise 7 In the picture you can see the average mileage of an US car. 1 gallon = 40.2 miles In Europe we measure the mileage the other way around: 100 km = 4.5 liters Can you convert that mileage into liters per 100 km?

  23. VOLUME

  24. VOLUME

  25. AREA Acre The acre is a unit of area. One acre is equal to 4.84 squared yards or 43.56 squared feet. One acre is, more or less, a football field. 1 acre = 4047 m2 1 acre = 0.4047 ha

  26. TEMPERATURE

  27. TEMPERATURE Temperature can be measured in Fahrenheit degrees. For example, the weather forecast can predict a maximum temperature of 85 ºF in a nice spring day. 0º C = 32 ºF 100 ºC = 212 ºF. Celsius (C)  Fahrenheit (F): F = 1.8 · C + 32 Fahrenheit (F)  Celsius (C)‏ C= (F – 32) / 1.8 Fahrenheit

  28. TEMPERATURE

  29. TEMPERATURE

  30. TEMPERATURE Exercise 9 ºF ºC Boiling water 100 ºC Ice 32 ºF Fill in the gaps: Kitchen oven 220 ºC Human body 96.8 ºF Hot summer day 45 ºC Cold winter night 28 ºF

  31. SUMMARY LENGTH A mile is equivalent to 1.6 km. A yard is equal to 0.9 m There are three feet in a yard. A foot is equal to 30 cm. An inch is equal to 2.5 cm. 12 in = 1 ft MASS A pound is a little bit less than ½ kg There are 16 ounces in a pound. A stone is equal to 14 pounds

  32. SUMMARY VOLUME The basic unite of volume is the gallon. 1 gallon = 4 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints 1 pint = 16 fl. oz. (fluid ounces)‏ AREA An acre is an unit of area. One acre is equal to 0.4 ha TEMPERATURE Temperature is measured in Fahrenheit degrees. 0 ºC = 32 º F C = (F - 32) / 1.8
