  6. The Fate of Children During theHolocaust • The Germans and their collaborators killed as many as 1.5 million children, including over a million Jewish children and tens of thousands of gypsy children

  7. Children of the Holocaust • Full statistics of children who died during the Holocaust will never be known.

  8. From the very first, Jewish children suffered at the hands of the Nazis. They were trapped in a world that was increasingly hostile and unfriendly.

  9. Education of Jewish children • April 25, 1933- The Law against Overcrowding in German Schools restricted the number of Jewish children in schools not to exceed 1.5 percent of the total number of students • After Kristallnacht(Crystal Night), Nov.1938, Jewish and Gypsy children could not attend German schools • In 1942, all education of Jewish children was stopped.

  10. What was Kristallnacht? • Also called The Night of Broken Glass. • It was a pogram or series of attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on November 9–10, 1938.

  11. The Cause of Crystal Night • Crystal Night was in retaliation for 17 yr. old Herschel Grynszpan killing a German Embassy official in Paris. • He was upset because his family had been sent to a relocation camp in Poland.

  12. Kristallnacht: The Beginning of the Holocaust • Over 96 Jews were killed and hundreds more injured • More than 1,000 synagogues were burned • Over 7,500 Jewish businesses were destroyed • Cemeteries and schools were vandalized • 30,000 Jews were arrested and sent to concentration camps

  13. Kindertransports(Children Trains) • Funded by private citizens, 10,000 Jewish children escaped the Nazi net by being sent to the Netherlands, Great Britain, Palestine and the U.S. in 1939.

Fate of children who were not evacuated • Thousands of mentally or physically disabled were killed by overdoses of poison & medications • Transported to killing centers • Sent to concentration camps as prisoners & laborers • Used for medical experiments • Went into hiding • Obtained false papers & posed as “Aryan”
