  1. MLA Citations How to do a Work Cited entry

  2. Basic format for a book • “For most books, arrange the information into three units, each followed by a period and one space: the author’s name; the title and subtitle, underlined [or italicized]; and the place of publication, the publisher and the date” (Hacker 131).

  3. Use this format: • Author’s last name, First name. Title of Book. Place of publication: Publisher, year. • (Additional formats can be found in section 32b of your Pocket Style Manual.)

  4. Examples Works Cited Author’s last name, First name.Title of Book.Place of publication: Publisher, year. Hacker, Diana.A Pocket Style Manual.Boston: Bedford/St. Martins, 2008. Krauss, Nicole.The History of Love.New York: W.W. Norton, 2005.

  5. Format of a Work Cited list • The title, Work(s) Cited, should be centered above the entries • The entries should be in alphabetical order, based on the first word in the entry (usually the author’s last name). • Follow punctuation rules exactly.

  6. Practice: Make a Work Cited entry for Les Miserables • This book will have slightly different format since it is translated. Use this format: Author’s Last Name, Author’s First Name. Title. Trans. Name of Translator. Place of publication: Publisher, year. Example: Allende, Isabel. Zorro. Trans. Margaret Sayers Peden. London: Fourth Estate, 2005.

  7. Check your work: Work Cited Hugo, Victor. Les Miserables. Trans. Charles E. Wilbour. New York: Ballantine, 1961.
