  3. Conjunctivitis, What Is It? • You might know it as it’s more common term: Pink Eye • ‘Pink Eye’ a contagious, epidemic form of acute conjunctivitis occurring in humans and certain animals: so called from the color of the inflamed eye. An Acute Infectious disease.

What Causes Pink Eye? • Viruses: Viruses that cause pinkeye are usually associated with accompanying cold or flu-like symptoms. • Bacteria: Bacterial infections are the cause of the crusty discharge patients experience during sleep. • Allergies: Allergic reactions can cause the tearing, redness and swelling associated with allergic conjunctivitis. Pollen, dust, mold and animal dander lead to inflammation of the conjunctiva in allergy patients. • Irritants: Irritants such as cigarette smoke, aerosols, household cleaners and industrial waste products can cause the redness, swelling and itchiness associated with pinkeye • Disease: Chronic diseases can lead to pinkeye symptoms. Chronic cases of pinkeye can be a symptom of an undiagnosed disease • A chemical splash in the eye • A foreign object in the eye

  6. Symptoms • Symptoms of Conjunctivitis vary between the different kinds, but generally include red, irritated, and itchy eyes, tearing, and discharge.

Treatment • Home treatment for pinkeye will help reduce your pain and keep your eye free of drainage. • If you wear contacts, remove them and wear glasses until your symptoms have gone away completely. Thoroughly clean your contacts and storage case. • Cold compresses or warm compresses (whichever feels best) can be used.

  9. How to clean your eyes: * When cleaning your eye, wipe from the inside!

To Reduce Spreading… • Do not go to day care or school or go to work until pinkeye has improved. • If the pinkeye is caused by a virus, the person can usually return to day care, school, or work when symptoms begin to improve, typically in 3 to 5 days. • If the pinkeye is caused by bacteria, the person can usually return to day care, school, or work after the infection has been treated for 24 hours with an antibiotic and symptoms are improving.

  11. Prevention • The best way to prevent contracting pink eye is to use Primary Prevention • This includes washing your hands frequently and avoiding touching and rubbing eyes. Also, don’t share wash cloths, eye makeup, or contact lenses.
