  2. COVAB SEMINAR SERIES Date: 5th June 2014 Starting time: 2:00pm Venue: Media Hall, Level 2, COVAB FINAL REPORTS OF JICA EXPERTS’ ACTIVITIES JICA Animal Disease Control Project This seminar is a special session focusing on some of the activities of the JICA Animal Disease Control Project. The project has, among others, equipped laboratories and supported human resource development in Uganda partly through bringing specialised professional experts to train Ugandan professionals and students in various techniques relevant to the Uganda setting. The last four experts have been here for the past few months conducting both field and laboratory-based training. Come let’s learn together and extend the knowledge SESSION ONE In this session, the public, professionals and students of various background will get the opportunity to learn about the significance of timely and accurate diagnosis of bacterial diseases and the scope of diagnostic techniques adapted and perfected for use in Uganda. A special focus will be put on Brucellosis, a devastating bacterial disease that affects both humans and animals causing fevers, lots of pain and abortions variously. Its accurate diagnosis is therefore necessary and follows a well-defined and designed bio-safety protocol to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and also avoid laboratory-acquired infections. SESSION TWO In this session, participants will learn about the significance of appropriate management of dairy cattle just before and soon after delivery (peri-parturient) for optimal milk production and fertility. Many dairy cattle perform poorly due to undetected or neglected and yet preventable, controllable and treatable peri-parturient diseases. Animal owners, the public, veterinarians and laboratory diagnosticians all have special roles to play in minimising losses caused by such preventable diseases.
