  2. SMSTC Seminar Series • For 1st year PhD Students by 1st year PhD Students • Originally inspired in Cambridge Part III Seminar Series. (40 talks in 3 days. 200 attendants). • Stream-based presentations • 20-30 minutes talk/presentation + 10 minutes question time. • Opportunity for PhD students to practise their presentation skills

  3. More advantages! • Show/share what you learnt in your “25%” of the time outside from lectures • Learn easily what takes longer to learn from a dry book (or at least an insight) • Share knowledge with people who probably have similar problems (2nd/3rd years probably know about it already). • A way to improve communication within maths PhD students within Scotland

  4. Streams / Theme Groups • Algebra • Analysis and PDEs • Applied Mathematical methods • Geometry and Topology • Mathematical Models • Probability and Statistics (prospectively merged) • Mathematical physics (QFT, String theory...) • Flexiblility depending on people interests

  5. Organisation • To be held in the Jan/Feb break • Lectures for 2/4 days on each of the subjects • Training on how to do a MATHEMATICAL presentation available • 1 stream coordinator (volunteer now! Good for CV!) • Each speaker sends an abstract to the coordinator and he merges, comments and spreads the world • (Hopefully) participation certificates available
