Geology Ontario Web Portal Why? • Minister’s Office directive resulting from client feedback • Increasing use of digital products • Increasing need for current information, available 24/7 How? • Create a delivery website using an out-of-the-box solution that meets current needs • Concentrate on delivering publications, assessment files, existing digital datasets

Highlights • Produced a geoscience web site for discovering and downloading data • Converted all existing Assessment Files and Publications (Maps and Reports) to PDF format • Converted all PDF image files to “PDF searchable” format (2,000,000 pages and 150,000 maps) • Converted digital data releases to format ready for web-download • Many geoscience themes available in the map view window • Used an “out-of-the-box” solution to minimize custom coding

Out-of-the-box Benefits • Applications readily managed with limited available resources • Large pool of skills available to select from • Limited programming expertise required • As new versions come on stream, solution systems can easily implement new functionality • Pressure software vendors to enhance “out-of-the-box” functionality versus custom coding • Develop common skill sets and solution methodologies across an organization
