  3. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF NAMIBIA KEY STATISTICS • 23% of all participating countries are African countries • out of the countries serving data, 17% are African countries • But: • only 52% of all African countries participate in OneGeology • out of those only 30%, or 15% of all African countries, serve data • out of all non-participating countries, 25% are African countries • 27% of the countries not serving data are from the African continent Earth Sciences for Namibia’s Sustainable Development

  4. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF NAMIBIA However, simply counting countries does not take the area covered into consideration, and a look at the OneGeology map clearly indicates that Africa is the continent with the largest areas neither covered in green nor in yellow. 6. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF NAMIBIA REASONS • The problems are manifold, and include: • limited access to the web • lack of technology and technological skills • lack of state-of-the-art geological data to be posted • The limited access to the web leads to non-awareness of OneGeology, and • non-awareness of the benefits that can be derived from OneGeology. Internet?!? Earth Sciences for Namibia’s Sustainable Development

  7. INNOVATIVE THINKING IS REQUIRED! Earth Sciences for Namibia’s Sustainable Development

  8. SOLUTIONS • ONGOING: • Promoting OneGeology through the • Organisation of African Geological Surveys • OneGeology nformation board at the • Geological Survey of Namibia entrance Earth Sciences for Namibia’s Sustainable Development
