  8. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Three Important Points on the Lord’s Prayer Why is the Our Father so important (give three points)? 1) Contains Jesus’ very words: “This term abbais an ipsissimavoxof Jesus and contains in nucehis message and his claim to have been sent from the Father.”;“here there is something quite new, absolutely new - the word abba.” 2) It contains Jesus’ personal teaching: • This is more than a Gospel “account” (“according to…”) – it directs us to Jesus himself 3) It summarizes basics of teaching of Christ • “…the Lord’s Prayer is the clearest and, in spite of its terseness, the most comprehensive summary of Jesus’ proclamation which we possess.” (J. Jeremias)

  9. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings “Our Father”: Seven Petitions List and explain the seven petitions of the Our Father • “Thy name be hallowed” (holiness of God) • “Thy kingdom come” (His authority over us) • “Thy will be done” (His will is goodness) • “Give us this day our daily bread” (supplies our need) • “Forgive us our trespasses…” (forgiveness is essential) • “Lead us not into temptation” (guidance in difficult world) • “Deliver us from evil” (much is at stake)

  10. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Old Testament & Lord’s Prayer Explain why we can say in much of the Lord’s prayer there is “nothing new.” (1) God long called “Father” in OT (Jesus expresses that faith) • “Look down from heaven and see, from thy holy and glorious habitation… thou art our father” (Isaiah 63:15-16) (2) God long seen as supplying our food (Jesus fulfills that faith) • “…feed me with the food that is needful for me…” (Proverbs 30:8) • “Bread of Presence” in OT worship; constant theme (e.g., manna) of God supplying our needs (3) Forgiveness and need for repentance consistent in OT (Jesus completes that forgiveness) • “Forgive your neighbor the wrong he has done… your sins will be pardoned…” (Sirach 28:2) (4) Theme of God’s “kingdom” also in OT (Jesus draws on that) • See quotation next slide: 1 Chronicles 29:10-18 (5) Striking resemblance of our Father to the “Kaddish” • A central Jewish prayer (see following slide)

  11. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings Old Testament & Lord’s Prayer (cont.) (4) Theme of God’s “kingdom” also in OT (Jesus draws on that) • “…and David said: "Blessed art thou, O LORD, the God of Israel our father, for ever and ever. [11] Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. [12] …O LORD our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building thee a house for thy holy name comes from thy hand and is all thy own. [17] …O LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep for ever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of thy people, and direct their hearts toward thee.” (1 Chronicles 29:10-18) • God as king – Samuel and David aware of that (“Thy kingdom…”)

  12. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings The Kaddish & the Lord’s Prayer (5) A central Jewish prayer (the Kaddish) resembles the Lord’s pray (Jesus articulates that) “…May His great name be exalted and sanctified is God's great namein the world which He created according to His will! May He establish His kingdom and may His salvation blossom and His anointed be near during your lifetime and during your days and during the lifetimes of all the House of Israel, speedily and very soon!” - “Kaddish is an ancient Jewish prayer”; “Of the prayer-forms of Kiddush Hashem (“sanctification of the name”), the most extreme example is the Kaddish. No other words we say in all our prayers are attributed the same level of sanctity.” Chabad.org

  13. Christian Doctrine 1 / Dr. Billings TERMS • Kaddish • Ancient Jewish prayer; resembles Lord’s prayer in part • Abba • Jesus uses this for God: respectful, familiar “Father” • ipsissimavox / ipsissimaverba • The very voice, the very word of Jesus • Hallowed • Holy, sacred • Pater Noster • “Our Father” (in Latin)
