Enhancing Your Thesis: Crafting an Arguable Claim

Presentation Transcript
We learned that a thesis is the main idea of a paper; while that is true, it is time to add a little more to our idea of a thesis. A thesis is the main idea of a paper or essay; it must be something arguable. “The Yellow Wallpaper explores the role of women in society” is not a thesis because no one could reasonably contradict it. “The Yellow Wallpaper blames the main character for her own madness” is a thesis because someone could contradict it. Write a thesis and an introduction paragraph on the topic “The Importance of Email.” Your thesis must make an arguable claim. June 8, 2010
Today we will: • Demonstrate knowledge of Act III. • Read aloud Act IV, scene 3 in a cooperative group. • Pay attention to characters and events. • Prepare your part before reading aloud. • Use your voice to portray the characters’ feelings. • Write a summary of the scene as a group. • Check Act IV study guide with cooperative group. • Go back into the text to find the answers. • Divide and conquer. • Read Act V in Graphic Classics pp. 30 to 39. • Begin work on study guide.
Read pp. 930-943. Scene 3 • You will have three people in a group. • Divide lines up. • Cassius and Brutus have the most lines. • One person could do all the other smaller parts! Or whoever does Cassius could have some at the end. • Cassius • Brutus • Lucilius • Poet • Messala • Lucius • Ghost • Varro
Scene 3 Summary • Before your group writes the summary, list all the most important events in this scene. • Then turn those events into a paragraph summary. • Finally, under your summary, describe Brutus’ emotional state. Explain!
Homework • Bring your language book.
