Langston Hughes • Born On Februrary 1st 1902 • Joplin, Missouri • James Hughes and Carrie Hughes were his parents • Parents were divorced when he was an infant • Was raised by his Grandmother in Lawrence Kansas • His Grandma died-Hughes went to Clevland Ohio • Went to Colubumbia University for a year • Got Bachelors degree from Lincoln University

Career • Worked odd jobs when he was young • Used Different forms of literary expression • Poet-The Weary Blues, Fine Clothes to a Jew • Novelist- Not Without Laughter, Tambourines to Glory Short Story Writer- The Ways of white folks, stories about Simple • Autobiographies- The Big Sea, I Wonder as I wander

  8. Negative Criticism • Many negro intellects felt as though their race was being portrayed negatively • Stereotypes were enforced • Looked at the lives of ordinary Negros as opposed to successful ones

  9. Positive Criticism • Hughes Creative life was full, varied, and original • Always honest • His writing seemed to speak for millions
